App Icon Sizes for iOS and Android, Explained

Which icon files each platform needs, where they go in your project, and how to design a master icon that holds up at every size.

How to use the app icon generator

  1. Upload your master icon: a square PNG of at least 1024 × 1024 pixels gives the sharpest results. JPG and WebP also work.
  2. Pick your packs: iOS, Android, Store listings, or any combination.
  3. Generate and download: you get one ZIP with a folder for each platform and a README that lists every file.

iOS app icon sizes

Apple needs one large 1024 × 1024 icon for the App Store and smaller versions for the home screen, Spotlight search, Settings, and notifications. Each comes at @2x and @3x scales for different screen densities. Apple rejects app icons that contain transparency, so this tool fills any transparent areas of the iOS and App Store icons with white.

In Xcode, open your asset catalog, select the AppIcon set, and drag each PNG onto the slot with the matching size. Recent Xcode versions can also build every size from the single 1024 px icon.

Android launcher icon sizes

Android picks a launcher icon from a density bucket that matches the device screen. Copy the mipmap-* folders from the ZIP into app/src/main/res/, and each ic_launcher.png lands in the right place. Android icons keep their transparency.

mipmap-xhdpi96 × 96

Android 8 and later also support adaptive icons, which use separate foreground and background layers. Those need two pieces of artwork, so they are not part of this pack. The PNGs here work as the standard launcher icon on all Android versions.

Tips for a master icon that scales well

  • Start at 1024 × 1024 or larger, so nothing has to be upscaled.
  • Keep the artwork simple. Fine detail and small text disappear at 29 or 48 pixels.
  • Leave some padding around the edges. iOS rounds the corners and many Android launchers crop to a circle.
  • Use a solid or gradient background for iOS instead of transparency.

Need other sizes, like a YouTube thumbnail or social banner? Try the image resizer. Have iPhone photos in HEIC format? Convert them with the HEIC converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the app icon generator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no watermark.
What size should my source icon be?
Use a square image of at least 1024 × 1024 pixels. The tool accepts images down to 512 pixels, but the 1024 px App Store icon is then upscaled and can look soft.
What happens if my image is not square?
The tool uses the largest square from the center of your image, so artwork near the edges may be cut off. For full control, crop to a square before uploading.
Why do my iOS icons have a white background?
Apple does not accept app icons with transparency. Transparent areas in the iOS and App Store icons are filled with white. Android icons keep their transparency.
Should I round the corners myself?
No. Upload a square icon. iOS and Android apply their own corner rounding or mask, and pre-rounded corners can show up as odd edges.
Are my files stored?
Your upload is only used to build the ZIP. The ZIP stays on our server for at most one hour so you can download it, and is then deleted automatically.
Does it create Android adaptive icons or Xcode Contents.json?
Not yet. The pack includes standard PNG launcher icons in mipmap folders and Xcode-style iOS file names, which you can drag into your AppIcon set.
